EGG Genius - Making it Portable
I've used the EGG Genius about a dozen times, and while initially reluctant to adjust my cooking style, I've definitely come to think of it as an essential tool. This is mainly because I'm often cooking for 20+ people with multiple timings on different cuts and types of meat. So in this situation, consistency is really helpful.
I don't love wires and cables all over the place, so that led me to look into ways to make the EGG Genius portable. In Canada and the US they sell a Big Green Egg battery pack so you don't have to connect the Genius to mains power. Unfortunately they aren't available in Australia. Enter the hack!
You can use almost any power bank, but I picked the Anker purely because I've used them before. The only other thing you need is a 5V-12V USB converter. They sell them on Amazon for about $15. Make sure your input is the right size, or get one that has a pack of different sized inputs.
I put this to the test on a 10hr pork shoulder smoke which took the power bank down to 47%. Winning.
In short, this is a great solution if you want things to get a little more portable or get cables out of the scene. Great for keeping your more expansive cooks on point.
